Overview of Position

Cultural Connection Workers (CCWs) are dedicated to bringing together family, extended family, community supports, and SIWS staff to assist in developing plans for child safety, as well as family and cultural connections, sometimes leading to placement or permanency. Additionally, CCWs provide guidance and support to Indigenous children and families and MCFD service providers. They offer cultural protocols/teachings, lead small ceremonies, and recruit Elders for the “Elders in Residence” program. This role is dedicated to ensuring that culture is embedded throughout the Agency, promoting a positive and culturally safe environment for children and families.

Preference may be given to Indigenous candidates as per Section 41 of the Human Rights Code.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Be a cultural navigator
  • Help Indigenous families reconnect to culture
  • Assist with band registry/status
  • Organize cultural events
  • Attend court with clients and Elders
  • Recruit and coordinate the “Elders in Residence” program and provide training
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Provide cultural teachings/guidance and spiritual support to children and families as well as MCFD service providers
  • Develop strong networking skills with Indigenous and non-Indigenous service providers
  • Build and maintain healthy relationships with fellow staff and support Indigenous children and families engaged with MCFD services
  • Provide a positive and culturally safe environment for children and families
  • Provide monthly, quarterly, and annual reports
  • Follow SIWS policies and workplace standards

Education and Experience

  • 2+ years of experience working within Indigenous communities
  • Lived experience is highly valued
  • Minimum Grade 12 education
  • Efficient with computers (ie. Typing, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, etc.)
  • Strong relationship-building skills
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to balance competing priorities, and work under pressure
  • Maintain an attitude of caring, respect, and optimism for their clients
  • Maintain a clear differentiation between the professional and personal self
  • Acceptable criminal records check
  • Valid BC Driver’s License with acceptable drivers abstract and access to reliable transportation is required
